Frequently Asked Question

How Public Computers Operate
Last Updated a year ago

ULS public-use computers permit all Pitt affiliates to log on during normal library hours (as posted on https://library.pitt.edu/hours). Non-affiliates can request login credentials from library service desks.

Public devices automatically log off after 10 minutes of inactivity. User data session data is deleted immediately upon log off to protect the privacy of students and their work. All work should be saved to removeable media (USB flash drive) or OneDrive cloud storage. Users agree to these terms, as well as accept the terms of the University Acceptable Computing Policy at the login screen.

Issues with ULS public computers should be reported to ULS IT. ULS IT does not interact directly with patrons; please record all relevant information when submitting a ticket (device name, patron name with email address, time of day, exact wording of error message, etc.).

Public computers can print to various self-service PittPrint printers deployed and maintained by CSSD. Issues with printing on public devices should be brought to the awareness of ULS IT, although we cannot resolve issues with public printers or print release stations.
