How to Search for a File or Folder on Windows 10
Procedure
- Type the name the file in the search bar on your taskbar.
- Windows will search your computer and if it is successful in finding your document it will show like below.
If Unable to find the document through this method:
- Open File Explorer by clicking on the brown folder icon on the taskbar.
- Navigate to This PC
- To save time, always select the specific drive or location instead of whole computer If you know the drive or folder you saved the file to. Selecting this pc and running the search will search the entire computer. That will take longer but might be necessary if you don’t remember where the file is saved. (Usually Windows (C:) for the whole computer and Documents for most normal documents)
- Type part or all of the name of the file or folder, or type a word or phrase that is in the file
- Try to search a file with its file extensions (for example for Word file type *.doc, Excel *.xls, Acrobat *.pdf, PowerPoint *.ppt and *.exe for executable files)
- Click SEARCH
Note: Use the filters found in File Explorer such as Date modified, Type, and Size to more easily locate the file or folder if it is difficult to find, even with searching.
For example you could click on the date filter to list files from the oldest to newest and vice versa.
