Frequently Asked Question
E-Mail Distribution List Instructions
To request a new Exchange Distribution List, please, provide the following information and fill out the form here: https://osticket.library.pitt.edu/open.php?topicId=17
1. List Name: ULS – New Distribution List Name Here
2. E-mail Alias: alias@pitt.edu (OPTIONAL)
3. List Members: for each member, provide the name and e-mail University of Pittsburgh address
1. List NAME
Choose a name that describes the purpose of your new distribution list. This name will appear in the University’s Global Address List and must begin with the Responsibility Center abbreviation as a prefix: “ULS – “.
The Distribution List name can contain letters, numbers, spaces, and ampersands (&). No other special characters are permitted.
2. E-mail ALIAS
By default, a new list will have an e-mail address that is derived from the list NAME by removing all the spaces. For example, the list called:
ULS – Symplectic Elements Implementation
will have the following e-mail address:
uls-SymplecticElementsImplementation@pitt.edu
This e-mail address is difficult to type because of its length. An e-mail ALIAS is an alternate e-mail address that is shorter or easier for people to remember.
The e-mail ALIAS is optional but is often used for long or difficult-to-remember e-mail addresses, especially if you intend to share the e-mail address to the public on a Web site for people to contact you.
The format for an e-mail ALIAS is:
- alias@pitt.edu, or alias@library.pitt.edu
- alias should not be used to misrepresent your identity
- alias must be longer than eight characters or contain a period, dash, or underscore if you are using @pitt.edu domain. (This
requirement will prevent your alias from conflicting with actual Pitt username that may be created in the future for new students,
faculty, and staff).
Example:
List NAME: ULS – Symplectic Elements Implementation
Default E-MAIL: uls-SymplecticElementsImplementation@pitt.edu
List ALIAS: uls-symplectic@pitt.edu
3. MEMBERS
Identify the members which need to be part of the Distribution List. Names included in the Distribution List must have Pitt-affiliated e-mail addresses. You can also include the name of another Distribution List group within a list.
