​​What do the different internet symbols mean​

These symbols help show how your computer is connected to the internet. Knowing what they mean can help troubleshoot internet connectivity issues. The Help Desk might ask which one is showing so we can help get you back online. You can see the internet connections symbol in the bottom right of your computer screen.

Procedure

Your computer is connected via ethernet. This is a hardwired connection.

Your computer is connected via Wi-Fi.

Your computer is not connected to the internet, but your computer can see Wi-Fi connections are available to connect to.

Your computer is not connected to the internet, and it can’t see any available internet connections.

If you are working at a desktop computer, it will either show the cable connection or the network unavailable symbol. This is because our desktop computers lack a Wi-Fi antenna.

If you are working on a laptop that plugs into a dock the dock should provide a hardwired connection to the internet and will show a cable icon. IF it is connected via Wi-Fi, it will show a Wi-Fi signal.
